Oil portrait painting

Portrait 2 (oil on canvas)
Portrait painting is the most difficult technique because if you make even a tiny shade on a face you can change its expression and therefore resemblance. If you do the same thing on an apple the result can be acceptable. I started the first layer of the flesh with ochre mixed with white obtaining a very light ochre. After drying I covered the area with a light coat of turpentine and oil that I had previously prepared in a glass jar. I used a clean brush so that the colour I applied later could run easily. On this oiled surface I painted some glazes ("velature" in Italian) of ochre. I added burnt Sienna on the cheekbone, ear, chin and neck.

On the jaw I used natural burnt umber. I made these shades with a dry and soft brush (ox or marten hair).I painted the mouth with the same process, from the light to the dark.I put veils of red and a little burnt sienna and burnt umber in the darker parts of the face, as I did for the ear. For the hair I used black and white shaded in the center with a soft and dry brush. I made the background with the Cassel earth because I found that black was too dark and cold, Cassel earth is a little warmer colour. I left the picture to dry for 2 weeks and then I sprayed a final varnish to make the tints homogeneous and give it a shining coat.
