Nude painting technique

The technique for this male nude painting is very simple. I used colours mixed with Liquin. Liquin is a quick-drying medium for oil and alkyd paint. I used a product by Winsor & Newton instead of linseed or poppy-seed oil as a medium because it dries quickly and makes the colours very hard. Oil colours may need some weeks to dry and even when they seem to be dry, you may discover that under the first layer the colour is still wet. Of course the speed of the drying time can be a pro but also a con if an artist needs more time to work. This is a personal choice. You can use oil in place of Liquin if you prefer, or you can add a few drops of poppy-seed oil in the Liquin to slow down the drying process. I first painted the background and I used mineral brown of Mussini. I chose this colour because the figure has a dark skin, so when I painted the flesh, I was helped by a dark background.

For the face I used few colours, just white and Cassel Earth, white for the light parts and Cassel Earth for the dark ones, using the background as half-tones. I did the same thing for the abdomen using the same colours as the face. I chose red for the flowers because I wanted to create a strong contrast. I thinned red with Liquin where they had to be more transparent and I used a smaller quantity of Liquin for the areas that I wanted more covering. I let the flowers dry, then I painted again over the areas that needed to have more covering and brilliance. After drying I covered the entire picture with a thin layer of pure Liquin, using it as a final varnish.
