Male nude painting in oil on canvas by Stefano Campitelli
I like the bright colors of this male nude painting that to me expresses summer, freedom and the relationship between man and nature.
I like the sea, its colors, being nude on a beach in summertime hearing the sound of the waves.
I used oil colors to paint this male nude on the beach and I want to explain a little bit how I made it.
Like in other paintings I used Liquin in place of oil and turpentine as a medium to mix the colors. It speeds up the drying time. Liquin is an alkyd resin by Windsor & Newton that can be mixed with oil and alkyd colors. It dries more quickly than oil and the final paint is harder.
Oil infact is very slow to dry, sometimes you can see that even after a few weeks the paint will be still fresh. When I want to finish a painting within reasonable time I use Liquin. If I need to slow down the drying time a little, I can add a few drops of poppy-seed oil in Liquin.
I began the figure with ochre mixed with white, tracing lightly the dark parts of the body. After drying, I went on painting with chre and burnt Sienna thinned in Liquin, thus creating transparent coats of color. This way the color is more vibrant and bright. While going on I blended the colors with a soft and dry brush, creating very soft and refined glazes ("velature" in Italian).
After drying, I began working on the sea with different shades of blue, glazes over glazes. That helped me create the transparency of the blue water. I added more Liquin when I wanted the color more transparent, less Liquin and more color when I wanted it to cover more.
I painted the sand and then the pebbles with a fine brush.
After drying I added a coat of Liquin as a final varnish all over the picture.
