My technique to make a realistic male nude drawing

To create a male nude drawing the pencil is a very simple and direct medium. There are no colours that must dry, no nasty smells, no bowls that fall over.

In nude pencil drawings, to create rich nuances, I use a technique that consists in applying graphite in more layers.

I usually work starting from photographs because a model should be restless very long.

So I take a photograph of the person I want to represent and I start working on the photo that gives me the possibility to study darkness and light.

This is just a starting point, then I emphasize certain areas and completely erase others.

If I use an image from a magazine, I often transform the photo according to my taste, my point of view.

I start from a sketch. To draw, I generally use the Fabriano semi-rough paper, Schoeller paper and watercolor hot pressed Arches paper.

I use different shades of pencils, from the 4H to the 9B, trying to reproduce exactly the shapes of the body.

When I draw I pay attention so as not to lean my hand directly on the paper, because pressure and sweat of bare hands can modify the grain. To avoid this I draw with a light pressure and put a sheet of paper under my hand.

For all kinds of textures I always use the same kind of strokes, regular and quite light.

Kinds of textures: rough, medium and thin.

Rough textures can be easy to reproduce, I can start with a layer of 4B pencil with a flat point and then I soften it with a sharp 2B pencil.

This texture is right for backgrounds and the areas of the drawing that are not destined to attract attention.

Medium textures are expressed in several different ways, with a lot of layers of graphite, for fabrics, for example, you can use a flat pointed 4B pencil and then soften this layer with a sharp 4H pencil.

Fine textures are used mostly to reproduce the skin. For male nude drawings, female nudes or a portrait I start with a very light layer of 4H and then proceed with H, B, 2B, 3B sharp pencils. For the darkest parts I can also use a 9B pencil.

You must remember:

Soft pencils have a dark sign, so softer the pencil, darker the mark. Sharp pencils create fine textures. Flat pointed pencils create rougher textures. A rough texture can be softened with pointed pencils.

Never stump a drawing with fingers, the work could have a dirty and careless appearance.

While working, continuously change the position of the sheet. You can notice that the surface is irregular and another layer of graphite may be still necessary.

Work from light to dark and try not to erase. The rubber can modify the grain of the paper. Lack of grain creates shining areas.

At the end of the work a fixative may be used, although not every artist agrees. Caution is necessary. A fixative changes the tones of the drawing and can create desagreeable spots. I suggest a fixative that is not too liquid.

In male nude drawing, the muscles of the body need particular attention. The male body creates strong contrasts. Look carefully at the light and shadows.

The best way to learn to draw is to practise on one's, so now it's your turn, have fun with pencils!
