This male nude drawing has been made in pencil and white pastel. I used a Schmincke soft pastel.
It is totally another way of drawing and it requires patience.
I first traced the silhouette and after this preliminary work I started using pencils of different gradations: HB, 4B and 9B.
I used thick pencils without plastic or wood around, so I could draw with all the body of the pencil, not only with the point, this helped me speed up the work as the drawing was large enough.
As for the pastel I used a Schminke white pastel.
I began by drawing with the pencil and the pastel. I then softened all with a piece of soft cloth.
For the details of the face, nose and eyes, that needed finer strokes, I drew with normal sharp pencils.
I then added some points and irregular strokes on the trunk to reproduce the rough surface of wood.
This kind of pastel is very friable, it unintentionally goes to parts of the drawing that must be empty, you can solve this problem with an eraser.
Figure drawing is demanding, while I was stumping, some areas became too light and so I had to put another layer of graphite to darken it.
In the male body darkness and light play an important role, the contrasts are often very strong, this is very interesting to watch.
I finished the work by spraying the final drawing with a fixative.
