My female nude painting

I began this female nude painting mixing ochre and white with oil and turpentine on a palette. I usually use a tear-off palette for use with oil and acrylic, made of sheets that can be stripped. It's quick and you do not have to clean it after use.

I applied this light colour all over the face and, after this, pure ochre again on the darker areas such as cheekbones, nose and eyelids, shading with a soft and dry brush (this technique helps me reach realistic effects).

I started painting the hair looking at it as masses, volumes with different colours such as a darker ochre, white and burnt Sienna. Only later did I consider the locks and the single piece of hair.

Then I started the body with the same colour as the face and let all the painting dry.

Before continuing painting, I applied on the face a layer of just oil and turpentine. The medium helps the color, applied later, run on the surface and get shaded easily with a brush. I started the face painting "veils" of pure color thinned with oil and turpentine. I used ochre, burnt Sienna and burnt Umber calibrating the darkness and light, coats on coats, transparent colors, one on the other. This technique makes the colors brighter and, besides, shading with a soft and dry brush can give almost the appearance of the airbrush technique.

I worked on the hair, trying to paint lock by lock with a fine brush.

After a color is dry you can "warm" it by painting on it a "veil" of burnt Sienna, red, etc. or if you want a colour colder you can put on it some blue thinned with oil and turpentine. This is an easier technique to change a colour giving a bright appearance to the painting.

I kept on giving more touches to the painting until I reached the result I desired.
